Mar 27, 2021

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford (13-3) scored seven runs on four hits, including a two-RBI double from freshman Drew Bowser, in the first inning to set the tone early in a 12-4 victory over Fresno State (7-9) on Saturday from Sunken Diamond.

Bowser finished the game 3 for 4 with a double and a career-best five RBIs while hitting out of the ninth spot in the order. The native of Los Angeles came up with the bases loaded in the first inning and delivered the two runs before plating one in the sixth and two more in the seventh with singles.

Junior Vincent Martinez also continued his torrid pace offensively, going 3 for 4 with a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs. Martinez drove in two with a single in the first inning before launching his fourth round-tripper of the year in the fifth. The two-run homer came on the first pitch he saw from reliever Treven Crowley.

With the multi-hit day, Martinez is now hitting a team-best .417 on the season.

Senior Nick Brueser extended his hitting streak to nine games by way of a 3 for 5 day at the plate that featured a pair of doubles and a run scored. Brueser is now hitting .500 (17 for 34) over the hitting streak.

Overshadowed by the offensive outpouring, sophomore left-hander Quinn Mathews logged six innings in a victory that moved him to 3-0 on the season. Senior Austin Weiermiller and freshman Tommy O'Rourke finished the game on the hill for the Cardinal, combining to pitch the final three scoreless frames. O'Rourke, who contributed the final two innings, struck out three.

Fresno State used eight pitchers in the setback, with Alex Kendrick getting the start and taking the loss after failing to record an out and being charged with all seven runs on three hits and three walks in the first. Kendrick fell to 0-1 with the loss.

Stanford will complete the two-game set with Fresno State on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. PT.
