Malia Nam, Allisen Corpuz Lead USC's First-Round Efforts At Augusta National Women's Amateur

Mar 31, 2021
Malia Nam in the 2021 Augusta National Women's Amateur first round.

Junior Malia Nam is holding steady in the top 10 through 12 holes while senior Allisen Corpuz is USC's clubhouse leader at 2-over, leading the six Trojans who kicked off the 2021 Augusta National Women's Amateur today, cut short due to inclement weather Wednesday (March 31) at Champions Retreat G.C.

About two thirds of the 82-woman field finished the first round in the second playing of the prestigious event. Those that didn't finish, including Nam and teammates Amelia Garvey and Brianna Navarrosa, will resume at 7:45 a.m. ET while those that did will begin with tee times at the same off of 1.

That will mean Trojan junior Alexa Melton will have the honor of hitting the first shot off of 1 for the second day in a row.

Melton finished her first round with a 4-over 76, tied for 46th, while Corpuz is tied for 24th. Senior Alyaa Abdulghany also got in her round, though had an uncommonly rough go of it and finished at 11-over.

Nam made the first round turn at 1-under before a bogey on 10 and will continue her second round on 13, one of just 14 players at par or better. She is one back of second, four off the lead.

Garvey (through 15) and Navarrosa (through 13) are tied for 32nd at 3-over.

Two years ago, Corpuz was the first player to hit in the final round on the first hole at Augusta.

Today, Melton kicked off the event on 1.

"I've never  been more nervous in my life," Melton said. "My heart was racing. But I couldn't stop smiling."

There will be a cut to 30 players taking place after 36 holes tomorrow ahead of Saturday's final round at Augusta National.
