Ducks Drop Battle To Cal

EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon took No. 23 California down to the wire, forcing a deciding match in singles play but the No. 46 Ducks fell, 4-3, in a Pac-12 Conference match Friday at the UO's outdoor tennis courts.
 
How it Happened: For just the second time all year, Oregon fell behind 1-0 after losing the doubles point. Allison Mulville and Julia Eshet kept their strong play as a pair going at No. 3, winning 6-4 to put the Ducks a match away from clinching the point. Oregon fell at the No. 1 and 2 spots to give the Golden Bears the point.
 
Singles play turned out to be a battle all the way through. Janice Tjen made quick work the No. 41 player in the country, Haley Giavara of California, with a 6-1, 6-1 victory to tie the match up at one. After Cal put up two more points with wins at the No. 2 and 5 spots, the Ducks secured two more matches to tie it up at three.
 
Rifanty Kahfiani won at No. 3, 6-4, 6-4, fending off a late run in set two by Cal's Jada Bui by breaking serve up 5-4 to put up the second point of the match for Oregon. Eshet cruised to an opening set victory before coming back from down 5-3 in the second set to win in a tiebreaker, putting up the Ducks' third point with a 6-2, 7-6(5) win.
 
The match came down to Uxia Martinez Moral at the No. 4 spot. After dropping the opening set, 6-4, she forced a tiebreaker in the second after being down 5-4. However, Cal's Hannah Viller Moeller took the tiebreaker, 7-2, to win the match 6-4, 7-6(2), and clinch for the Golden Bears.
