Power Bats Keep Rolling, Huskies Win 8-4

Apr 2, 2021

SEATTLE – The #6 Washington Huskies kept up their recent power displays, beating the California Golden Bears 8-4. Morganne Flores and Baylee Klingler each homered, making it four consecutive games that each of those players has homered, all against Pac-12 opponents and all in Husky wins.

The Huskies have now won five consecutive Pac-12 series against Cal, dating back to 2016. Washington's win was its tenth straight against Cal and makes the Huskies 26-4 on the season, including a 5-2 mark in Pac-12 play.

All five of Washington's first five batters in the lineup scored runs, combining for seven of Washington's eight runs. Klingler led the way with three runs as well as three walks, reaching base in all four of her plate appearances. Flores drove in three runs, while Noelle Hee went a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk and a sac fly.

Gabbie Plain improved to 16-0 on the year with another complete game victory, the best start by a Husky since Danielle Lawrie's school-record 18-0 start in 2010. No other pitcher in the nation has double-digit victories without suffering a loss. Plain is now just one win off the national lead as well.

SCORING
  • First Inning: Cal got on the board first with two hits and a walk in the first, making it 1-0 and ending Plain's 17.1-inning scoreless streak against the Golden Bears. This was the first time since March 17, 2019 that Washington has trailed in a game at Husky Softball Stadium. That deficit didn't lost long as Hee's sacrifice fly in the bottom half made it 1-1.
  • Third Inning: Cal struck again, scoring after a single and an error put a runner in scoring position to start the inning. Washington's response was emphatic: Flores homered for the fourth straight game, giving Washington its first lead at 4-2.
  • Fourth Inning: After Allchin lead off the inning with a single and a stolen base, Bates ripped a single off the glove of the first baseman to make it 5-2. Klingler followed that up with her 12th home run for a 7-2 lead before Lynch's hard double off the left-center wall scored Hee from first.
  • Fifth Inning: After a wild pitch put a runner in scoring position, Cal's single to short centerfield cut the Husky lead to 8-3. A double off the wall made it 8-4.
