Colorado 12th After First Round Of Silverado Showdown

NAPA, Calif. – The Colorado women's golf team is currently 12th after the first round of its own Silverado Showdown, shooting a 306 on Monday.
 
UCLA is the team leader after finishing with an even 288. The Bruins have a two-stroke lead over Washington (290) and another two schools are only three back from UCLA as Oregon State and USC each recorded a 3-over 291 at the 6,202-yard, par 72 Silverado Resort and Spa. Pac-12 Conference teams round out the top five as Arizona State recorded a 292 for fifth.
 
Junior Malak Bouraeda led the Buffs in the first round with a 2-over 74. Tied with 10 others for 21st, she recorded three bogeys and made six pars on the front nine before rallying on the back nine where she recorded back-to-back birdies on No. 12 and No. 13. She also had one additional bogey on the back nine to go with another six par.
 
Junior Alisha Lau and freshman Hailey Schalk are tied for 40th, shooting 4-over in the round. Lau started her day by making par on the first seven holes before recording a pair of bogeys on No. 8 and No. 9. She had another two bogeys early in the back nine but made par on the remaining seven holes.
 
Schalk also started well with five straight par before a pair of back-to-back bogeys on No. 6 and No. 7. She recovered with a birdie on No. 8 and finished the front nine with another par. Her back nine had three more bogeys and six additional pars.
 
CU's other two in the line-up are also tied after the first day. Senior Kirsty Hodgkins and sophomore Ellie Gower each recorded an 80 and are tied for 66th.
 
"Not a good day for our team but everyone had stretches of good holes," Colorado coach Anne Kelly said. "We need to focus a bit better, stay competitive and the good round will come."
 
The Buffs also had a pair of individuals playing at the tournament. Senior Elle Otten is tied for 47th after recording a 77 with two birdies, 10 pars, five bogeys and two double-bogeys. Sophomore Issy Simpson shot a 78 and is tied for 55th. She recorded three birdies, eight pars, six bogeys and one triple-bogey.
 
Individually there is a tie for first. Oregon State's Ellie Slama and Washington's Stefanie Deng each fired a 5-under 67 to start the tournament. Following the duo, there is a three-way tie for third with Allisen Corpuz (USC), Alessandra Fanali (ASU) and Yuki Yoshihara (UCLA) all shooting 2-under.
 
The Buffs will be paired with Northwestern and California for the second round. They will tee off from the 10th hole starting at 8:45 a.m. PT.
