Moriyama Leads Strong Finish at the Cowboy Classic

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Oregon turned in a solid final round at the Cowboy Classic Tuesday at Whirlwind Golf Club, shooting 6 under to finish the tournament 5 under and in eighth place in the 23-team event. Yuki Moriyama capped off a solid couple of days with a 3-under 69 to finish tied for 11th at 6 under overall to lead the way individually for the Ducks.
 
How It Happened: Nate Stember fired the low round of the day for the Ducks, shooting a 4-under 68 with seven birdies to finish tied for 24th at 2 under. He started his day with a bogey at hole No. 7, but bounced back with birdies at the next two holes to get under par. From there he made three birdies and a pair of bogeys on the back nine to get back to the front at 2 under before birdies at holes two and six got him to 4 under.
 
Moriyama got his day started with a birdies at the par-5 seventh but gave it back with a bogey at 10. After going bogey, birdies at holes 13 and 14, he would go bogey-free over his final 10 holes with a trio of birdies including one at the par-3 sixth to close out his round at 3 under.
 
Tom Gueant closed out the tournament with an even-par 72 to finish 1 under and tied for 28th. He was 2 over through 10 holes but turned it things around with a birdie at the par-4 18th to get back to 1 under. After a bogey at the first hole, Gueant birdied the par-5 second hole and the fourth hole to get back to level par for the day.  
 
Greg Solhaug turned in the fourth and final counting score for the Ducks with a 1-over 73, finishing 9 over for the tournament. Jake Sollon shot a 4-over 76 and ended 7 over for the week.
 
Notable: Moriyama has finished in the top 15 in four of the last five tournaments … He's delivered a counting score for the Ducks in 20 of his first 21 career rounds … Moriyama matched a season-low with his 3-under 69 … Gueant has now shot par or better in eight of his last nine rounds … For the tournament, Oregon shot 20 under as a team on the front nine but was 14 over on the back nine.
