Apr 10, 2021

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team rallied with seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead over Washington State and earn a 10-7 win against the Cougars.

Trailing by four runs heading to the bottom of the seventh, Utah scored seven runs with two outs to take the lead and go up 10-7. In all, the Utes scored seven runs on five hits and two errors by Washington State.

Rykker Tom was huge at the plate all day going 3-4 with two RBI and scored two runs. Every other Ute had a hit in the game.

Utah started out hot by scoring two runs in the first inning. Jayden Kiernan reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. He raced home after a single from Christopher Rowan, Jr. that was botched by the center fielder allowing him to take second and Kiernan to score from first. Tom notched one of his RBI next with a single to left field to score Rowan putting Utah up 2-0.

Kyle Robeniol got the start and he had an easy first three innings sitting down nine in a row to start the game. Washington State broke through in the fourth though, scoring six runs on six hits to go up 6-2.

After Utah got one run back in the bottom of the fourth, Washington State extended their lead once again to 7-3 the next inning scoring one more run and making the Utes go to their bullpen and bring in Matthew Sox. Once he came in, the Cougars didn't have much luck at the plate the rest of the game. He was lights out pitching 3.1 innings and only allowing one hit and striking out four.

Sox coming in and locking the Cougars down allowed the Utes to start chipping away at the 7-3 lead. Utah didn't break through until the seventh. The rally started with a Jayden Kiernan single to get Gabe Singer to third. The Utes had four more singles from Kai Roberts, Rykker Tom, Jaylon McLaughlin and Singer to total the seven runs.

After already scoring a couple of runs, McLaughlin singled with the bases loaded to tie the game up at seven. Kramer stepped up next and knocked another single to center field to score two more runs and give Utah the lead back.

Brayson Hurdsman came in for Sox on the mound and pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his third save of the season. He only allowed one hit and took the Cougars down in order in the ninth.

Utah moves to 8-16 on the season and 4-7 in Pac-12 play now.

The rubber match for the series will be Sunday, April 11 at 1 p.m. at Smith's Ballpark.
