SEATTLE – The Washington men's tennis team earned their first Pac-12 victory, defeating the Oregon Ducks, 6-1, for the first time since the 2014 season in a rivalry match. Ewen Lumsden clinched the match for the Huskies with a well fought win on court No. 2.
The Huskies started the match by earning the doubles point. Freshman Han-Chih Lin and Lumsden took court No. 3 with a swift 6-1 win. Thibault Cancel and Clement Chidekh also had a quick set clinching the doubles point for Washington on No. 2 with a 6-2 win.
"I think the big thing for us is that we just competed well the whole way up and down the line. I mean there wasn't one court where we weren't playing tough," said Head Coach Matt Anger.
Mostly every set in singles was competitive, with three matches going into a tie break and two of the three going into a third set. Lumsden went into his third set after splitting the first two 6-4, 4-6, with a Husky 3-1 lead. Lumsden broke for a 4-3 lead and then when serving for the match at 5-4, Lumsden took the win and clinched the match after a lengthy rally on a net court that dropped on Oregon's side.
With the match clinched, Lin also battled for his win on No. 4 with a 7-6, 6-7 split he took the win with a 10-4 tiebreak. Jack Pulliam also had a tough match splitting the first two sets 7-5, 6-7 and taking the third set with a 6-4 win in No. 6.
Jack Davis was the first person to win a singles match for the Huskies with a quick 6-4, 6-2 victory on No. 3 over Quinn Vandecasteele. Clement Chidekh got a ranked win over 91st-ranked Emmanuel Coste at No. 1 singles, coming back from a 3-1 deficit in the first set and dominating the second set, winning 7-5 and 6-2.
"It's not like we were making every shot, we had our struggles," said Anger, "but, we weren't going to give in at all and I think when we're doing that we can do really well."
The Huskies will stay in Seattle for the regular season finale, hosting Stanford on Sunday, April 18th at 12:00 p.m. Washington's previously scheduled match with California for the 16th was canceled by the Golden Bears.
