Luca Petovary Named MPSF/KAP7 Newcomer of the Week

Apr 13, 2021

TEMPE, ARIZ.-- On Tuesday morning, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation announced that Arizona State freshman, Luca Petovary, was awarded MPSF/KAP 7 Newcomer of the Week honors. This is the second time Petovary was awarded this honor, which comes after her stellar performance against No. 2 UCLA this past weekend.

Coming into last weekend, Petovary was four goals shy of entering the ASU all-time freshman goals scored record books. She tallied five goals on the weekend against No. 2 UCLA, and played a large role in Saturday's upset with two goals, one drawn exclusion, a steal, a field block, and an assist.

In game two she got it done on both sides of the ball taking on another two drawn exclusions and another steal. She recorded three of her five goals on Sunday, where her third goal came with 1:12 remaining in overtime to send the game to sudden death to give the Sun Devils the shot at two straight upset wins.

Her five goals moved her into eighth all-time in goals scored as a freshman, with 38 (the team lead), and she is just one goal shy of tying with Maud Koopman (39) for seventh all-time.

Petovary is also tied for eighth in the NCAA with her 38 goals, and is the only freshman in that top 10 list. In the MPSF, Petovary sits tied at second with USC's Denise Mammolito each with 38 goals a piece.

This is Petovary's second career MPSF award, after initially being named Newcomer of the Week after the second week of competition when the team played California Baptist University.

Others nominated: Jewel Roemer (Stanford), Mallory Reynoso (Cal)
