No. 2 UCLA Defeats No. 15 Indiana, 14-10

Sophomore Abbi Hill scored a season-high-tying five goals in the win at No. 15 Indiana.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- No. 2 UCLA (10-2, 8-2 MPSF) ended its four games in four days road trip with a 14-10 win at No. 15 Indiana (8-12, 0-8 MPSF) on Tuesday morning at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center. With the win, the Bruins improve to 16-0 all-time against the Hoosiers.

Sophomore Abbi Hill, who had scored three goals in the last nine games, broke out to lead the Bruins with a game-high and season-high-tying five goals. Sophomore Hannah Palmer tallied five points (three goals and two assists) while senior Lexi Liebowitz chipped in four points (one goal, three assists). Senior Jahmea Bent got the start in the cage and went the distance, recording nine saves while allowing 10 goals.

Izzy Mandema opened the scoring in the first quarter with a goal for the Hoosiers (6:06). Junior Val Ayala set up Hill with the equalizer on a power play (4:58). Then Hill set up senior Brooke Maxson for a power play strike that found the back of the net (4:07). But Mandema tied it at 2-2 with her second score (3:04). Junior Ava Johnson scored from two meters off a nice feed from Palmer (2:28). Then after a goal by Indiana, Hill scored back-to-back goals to complete her hat trick. The first was on a power play (1:40) and the second was on a penalty shot that was drawn by junior Katrina Drake (0:34) to give the Bruins a 5-3 lead at the end of the first period.

Zoe Crouch opened the scoring for Indiana (5:39) in the second period with a penalty conversion to cut the Bruins' lead to 5-4. Crouch then scored again (3:56) to tie the game at 5-5. Hill found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the game (2:02) to put the Bruins back in front, 6-5. Both teams continued trading goals with the Bruins getting a goal from Palmer (1:01) and Liebowitz (0:09) who ended the scoring in the period with the Bruins leading 8-7 at the break.

Johnson took a pass from Palmer at two meters to open the scoring immediately in the third period (7:47) pushing the lead to 9-7. But Crouch drew the Hoosiers closer with a goal (5:44) from the front court. Drake put the Bruins back up by two at 10-8 with a power play goal off a nice feed from Liebowitz (4:38). Kallie White would score for IU (3:57) to cut the Bruins' lead to 10-9, which would be the score heading into the fourth period.

Palmer opened the scoring in the final period with a power play goal (7:12) off an assist by Liebowitz to push the lead to 11-9. Then Palmer completed her hat trick with a penalty shot conversion (5:52) to put the Bruins up 12-9. Senior Roxy Wheaton set up junior Bella Baia for her first score of the game (5:20) to extend the lead to 13-9. Hill made it four unanswered goals for UCLA with her fifth of the game on a power play (4:34) to extend the lead to 14-9. Lanna Debow ended the Bruins' scoring run with a goal at even strength (1:35) to trim the Hoosiers' deficit to 14-10, which proved to be the final score.

Mary Askew registered four saves for the Hoosiers, who were led by hat tricks from Crouch and Tina Doherty.

The Bruins return to action on Saturday, April 24, when they host No. 1 USC at 11:00 a.m. PDT at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center.
