No. 1 UCLA Defeats No. 6 Cal Poly 3-2

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- No. 1 UCLA (24-1) posted its third-consecutive 3-2 victory at the Center of Effort Challenge on Saturday over the tournament hosts, No. 6 Cal Poly (17-7) at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex. With the win, the Bruins improve to 7-0 all-time against Cal Poly. The win also extended UCLA's winning streak to 21 straight duals which is the fourth-longest in school history. Additionally, the Bruins have had at least one dual winning streak of 20 or more in each of the last four full seasons (2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021). The Bruins were 13-2 in 2020 when COVID-19 shortened the season.

The Bruins took a 1-0 lead on court five when Rileigh Powers and Jaden Whitmarsh dominated Vanessa Roscoe and Josie Ulrich 21-10, 21-8.

UCLA went up 2-0 on court four when a new duo of Jacqueline Quade and Cami Sanchez made its debut. They trailed 10-4 in the first set but closed it out on a 17-8 run and never looked back, defeating Sam Strah and Eleonore Johansen 21-18, 21-11.

The Mustangs got on the board when Macy Gordon and Emily Sonny defeated Savvy Simo and Lexy Denaburg 21-16, 21-19.

But the Bruins sealed the win on court three when another new pair, Devon Newberry and Lea Monkhouse rallied for a thrilling three-set win over Mariah Whalen and Tia Miric 23-25, 21-14, 15-8.

Jayelin Lombard and Amy Ozee scored the final point of the dual for Cal Poly to provide the 3-2 final when they outlasted another new tandem of Megan Muret and Abby Van Winkle in a tight three-set match 21-19, 19-21, 23-21 on court two.

UCLA will concluded the tournament tonight in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 clash as UCLA faces second-ranked USC (21-2) at 6:30 p.m.
