USC Baseball Beats LMU, 8-1, to Close Homestand

LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team closed an eight-game homestand on Tuesday night, beating LMU 8-1 in a non-conference matchup.
 
Clay Owens homered twice and eight Trojan pitchers held the Lions to one run on four hits, as USC improves to 18-13 on the season. LMU falls to 12-22.
 
The teams were even at 1-1 heading into the fifth inning, but USC got a sacrifice fly from Ben Ramirez to break the tie and then an RBI single from John Thomas to go up 3-1.
 
Owens extended the lead with a solo-homer in the sixth and then blasted a two-run shot in the seventh as part of a four-run inning for USC. Bart West and Thomas also drove in runs in the frame to make it 8-1.
 
Ethan Hoopingarner got the start and tossed 2.0 innings before giving way to the Trojan pen. Carson Lambert, Tyler Stromsborg, Patrick Hubbs, Ethan Reed, Charlie Hurley, Toby Spach and Gus Culpo all had scoreless frames on the day, with Hubbs picking up the win as the pitcher of record in the fifth.
