Washington Sweeps Four Races At Washington State

Apr 24, 2021

COLTON, Wash. – The Washington men's rowing team won all four of its races over Washington State Saturday morning on the Snake River.

Washington sent its third varsity eight, freshman eight and varsity four to WSU, with the rowers in the two eights also rowing in fours. In total, two eights and five fours competed vs. the Cougars.

The Huskies opened the morning with their third varsity eight, led by coxswain Thomas Wenk and stroke rower Jeffrey Thiers, rowing to a win over Washington State. The Huskies completed the windy, 2,000-meter course in 5:52.99, more than 24 seconds ahead of the Cougar crew.

Washington's freshman eight, featuring the same nine athletes that beat Santa Clara the previous Saturday, but in a slightly different order, followed with a win, more than 50 seconds in front of the WSU second varsity boat.

The same rowers who competed in those eights then returned to the race course in fours, along with the Washington varsity four.

In the first flight of fours, Washington's three entries finished first, second and third, ahead of two WSU crews. Thiers was joined by Max Heid, Chase Barrows, Austin Regier and coxswain Grace Murdock in the winning "B" crew. The Huskies' "C" entry took second, in front of the Washington varsity four.

The final race of the day pitted two fours comprised of UW freshmen against two crews from WSU. The Huskies' "D" boat, stroked by Dutchman Robert Pluijmert and coxed by Bellevue Newport High grad Athena Baches, won that race, with the "E" crew taking second, ahead of WSU's two boats.

Next Saturday, the Huskies return to the Montlake Cut for the 2021 Windermere Cup. This year, the Windermere Cup will serve as host for the annual Cal Dual, for both the men and women. Fans are encouraged to watch the regatta from home, via the live video stream at GoHuskies.com/Live.
