No. 2 UCLA Falls to No. 3 Stanford, 13-8

TEMPE, Ariz. -- No. 2 UCLA (12-4) fell in the 2021 MPSF Championship semifinals to No. 3 Stanford (12-4), 13-8, on Saturday afternoon at Arizona State's Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on Friday morning. With the loss, the Bruins dropped to 36-53 all-time against the Cardinal.

Sophomore Abbi Hill led the Bruins in scoring with a hat trick against Stanford. Sophomore Hannah Palmer and senior Brooke Maxson contributed two goals each. Redshirt sophomore Georgia Phillips got the start in the cage and went the distance, recording eight saves while allowing 11 goals.

The Cardinal led 3-2 at the end of the first period. The Bruins received one goal each from Maxson (4:01) and Hill (1:40).

Stanford led 7-3 at the break. Hill scored the only goal for UCLA in the second period (5:28) with Cardinal winning the quarter 4-1.

The Bruins rallied to win the third quarter 3-2. UCLA received a second goal from Maxson (5:52) and a goal from junior Ava Johnson (4:59). Hill completed her hat trick (4:17) to trim Stanford's lead to 8-6. But the Bruins would get no closer as the Cardinal's Chloe Harbilas scored the final goal of the third period (3:32) to put Stanford up 9-6 heading into the fourth.

Stanford won the final stanza 4-2 to provide the 13-8 final. UCLA got a pair of goals from Palmer (2:14 and 0:43) in the fourth period.

Emalia Eichelberger tended the cage for Stanford and had three saves while allowing eight goals. Jewel Roemer led Stanford with four goals.

The Bruins return to action tomorrow in the third-place game against No. 5 Arizona State at 11:30 a.m. PDT.
