Series Sweep

May 2, 2021

STANFORD, Calif. – Another dominant outing from Alana Vawter paved the way for a Stanford victory, Sunday. The Cardinal rode Vawter's second complete game shutout of the weekend, to a 2-0 victory to finish off a sweep of Oregon State at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium.

The victory clinched the overall series, and gave the Cardinal (28-14, 8-7 Pac-12) the Pac-12 series sweep – its second three-game sweep of the season.

Vawter improved to 19-5 with her 17th complete game of the season. She spaced out two hits and two walks to conclude her weekend with a 3-0 record, and 22.1 shutout innings. Vawter has pitched 32.1 consecutive, shutout innings – dating back to the fifth inning in the second game of the Oregon series (April 23).

The defense made the few base runners Oregon State (16-23, 3-15 Pac-12) put on irrelevant, as the Beavers went 0-for-7 with runners on base, and 2-for-8 on advancement opportunities.

A strong showing from Mariah Mazon in the circle kept the Cardinal from busting the game open, but Stanford strung together just enough hits for the two-run victory. A two-out rally in the bottom of the third gave Stanford the lead, with Teaghan Cowles and Taylor Gindlesperger reaching on a walk and an error. Cowles was pushed across the plate for the winning run on an outfield single from Aly Kaneshiro for the game winning run.

Stanford added an insurance run in the fifth thanks to Gindlesperger's speed. Her shot into right center dropped just outside of the glove of the Beaver centerfielder for her eighth triple of the year, and she scored on a RBI groundout from Eleni Spirakis for the 2-0 lead.

The Cardinal will continue its final push through May with a split weekend. Stanford hosts California in a nonconference game, Wednesday at 4 p.m., before playing a Pac-12 road series against UCLA, May 7-9, with all four games being televised on the Pac-12 Network.
