Cal Opens Pac-12 Championship Against Arizona State

Senior Nikki Zaccaro and the Golden Bears open the Pac-12 Championship against Arizona State on Wednesday.

PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP
— Cal is the fifth-seeded team in the 2021 Pac-12 Championship and will open against fourth-seeded Arizona State in a quarterfinal on Wednesday (4 pm PDT) with the winner advancing to play unbeaten and top-seeded host No. 13/15 ranked Stanford in a semifinal on Thursday (4 pm PDT) with the title game set for Saturday at Noon against either second-seeded USC or third-seeded Colorado
— The winner of the 2021 Pac-12 Championship earns one of 16 automatic berths to the 29-team NCAA Tournament that begins May 14 with the bracket to be announced May 9 
— Cal is playing in its third Pac-12 Championship after falling 22-9 to Oregon in Boulder its opening quarterfinal game in 2018 that was also the first-ever contest played in the Pac-12 Championship and splitting a pair of games in Eugene in 2019 with a 12-8 victory over Arizona State in the quarterfinals before falling 16-5 in the semifinals to USC
— There was no Pac-12 Championship in 2020 due to COVID-19

2021 REGULAR-SEASON REVIEW 
— Cal's lone two victories came via a two-game home-and-home sweep of Fresno State but the Bears lost seven games by two goals or less including six of their final eight 
— Cal's defense was significantly better the second time around the Pac-12 with 53 goals allowed over its final five games against league competition compared to 89 in its first five
