Sun Devils Fall To #2 Texas, Bow Out of NCAA Tournament

AUSTIN, Texas - No. 31 Arizona State's season came to an end Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-0 loss to the hosting No. 2 Longhorns. The final match of ASU's 33rd-consecutive postseason appearance featured senior Sammi Hampton closing out her collegiate career with one final doubles victory.
 
"It was certainly a tough match obviously and I give a lot of credit to Texas, they're ranked number two in the country for a reason," head coach Sheila McInerney said. "We played quite well in the doubles and had a chance to win it, and in singles Texas came out and took control fairly early. We battled back well in some second sets and extended the match well but Texas is a good aggressive team with good ball tolerance so they can be aggressive and still hit eight, nine, 10 shots if they need to. They'll be a tough opponent the rest of the way in the tournament and we wish them well.
 

"I'd like to thank our seniors," McInerney added. "Our seniors have had great careers here, no doubt about it. Ilze plays in the individual tournament in a couple weeks and then I'm really looking forward to what all the seniors do after they leave here because it really is a really special group and we're really grateful to have them."
 
Ilze Hattingh begins her run in the NCAA Singles Championship May 23 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. She'll join ASU men's senior Nathan Ponwith in the Sunshine State as he goes on a run in the men's portion of the tournament.
