USC Baseball Takes Series Finale at Oregon State, 5-3

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The USC baseball team put up four runs in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie and then held on late to pick up a 5-3 win at Oregon State on Sunday afternoon.
 
Freshmen Garret Guillemette and Carson Wells each had two-run knocks in the eighth to help USC improve to 20-21 overall and 8-13 in Pac-12 play. The Beavers fall to 31-15, 13-8 with the loss.
 
USC struck first in the game, getting a run-scoring single from Ben Ramirez in the third inning, but a solo-homer by Oregon State's Troy Claunch tied things up in the sixth.
 
Tyresse Turner led the eighth off with a single and then two walks loaded the bases for USC. Guillemette singled up the middle to make it a 3-1 game and then Wells knocked a double off the wall in left to plate two more.
 
The Beavers came up with a pair of runs in the ninth, but Nate Clow got a flyout to finish off the game and pick up the save. Toby Spach got the win on the mound as the pitcher of record during USC's comeback in the eighth. Kyle Wisch tossed a scoreless bottom of the eighth before giving way to Clow in the ninth.

Alex Cornwell tossed 6.1 stellar innings in the start for the Trojans, giving up just one run on two hits. The USC lefty took a perfect game into the sixth inning before giving up his lone run. He struck out a career-best eight batters on the day, while walking none.
