Haylei Archer Struck Out Three Ducks On Thursday

BERKELEY - Starting in the circle for the first time since April, Haylei Archer had a tall order ahead of her in facing No. 11 Oregon Thursday afternoon from Levine-Fricke Field.

Cal's true freshman battled tough, but the Ducks emerged victorious, 2-0, in the series opener. The Golden Bears fell to 17-17 overall and 3-9 in conference play.

Archer went four and a third innings, striking out three on six hits, one walk and two earned runs. Archer got the Bears out of multiple jams early in the contest to keep the game scoreless halfway through.

Oregon scored both of its runs in the top of the fifth. An RBI double and an infield single allowed the Ducks to go up, 2-0.

Mikayla Coelho gave the Bears a strong chance to tie the game with a double to start the bottom of the sixth. She moved over to third, but that was as close as she'd get before Oregon got out of the inning.

Lauren Espalin singled to center for Cal's first hit of the game. Tatum Anzaldo notched two hits, including a bunt single to put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh.

Chloe Romero entered the game in relief of Archer in the fifth. The senior went two and two-thirds, striking out three on two hits and no runs.

Cal and Oregon continue their series with a doubleheader on Friday starting at noon.
