Hruby Shares Lead After Day One of NCAA Regionals

May 17, 2021

CLE ELUM, Wash. – The University of Washington men's golf team sits tied for fourth at the 2021 NCAA Cle Elum Regionals after posting a 4-under 280 on Monday during the first round of the three-day event held at Tumble Creek Golf Club. The Huskies were led by sophomore Petr Hruby who shares the individual lead with his 5-under 66.

Wake Forest and San Francisco are tied for first 6-under 278 while Pepperdine is third at 5-under. The top five teams following the tournament will advance to the NCAA Championships along with the top individual not on an advancing team.

"Petr played really, really well today, it's not easy to shoot 5-under but he kind of made it look easy almost," said head coach Alan Murray. "That was a big round for us and kind of papered over a couple of cracks. Teddy shooting under par as a freshman in his first regional, that's big. Jan played his last six holes at three-under par, which was important for us. Noah had an uncharacteristic off day, so Jan getting back to 1-over was really important. You can see how tight it is, we're only two shots behind first place. We talked about it in the meeting last night, every shot is critical and Jan shooting like that was really big for us. Henry had an up and down day shooting 1-over. You can't win it on day one, but you can dig yourself a big hole. We're in decent shape headed into round two and we just have to get after it again tomorrow."

Hruby got to 1-over following his second hole but quickly picked up steam and finished the front nine with two birdies and his second eagle of the season. Hruby's eagle, which was his second in as many events, came on the par-5, 500-yard eighth hole. After making the turn at 3-under, Hruby would add three more birdies on the back nine along with just one error to move up the leaderboard into a tie for first.

Freshman Teddy Lin was next in the lineup for the Huskies as he is tied for 15th with a 1-under 70. Lin's round started with a bogey but he quickly responded by going 2-under over the next seven holes with no errors to make the turn at 1-under. A bogey on 13 was followed by his third eagle of the season on the par-5, 605-yard 14th hole and a birdie on the par-5 15th hole.

Seniors Jan Schneider and Henry Lee are both tied for 32nd with a 1-over 72. Schneider opened with a birdie before a trio of errors pushed his score to 3-over at the turn. After another bogey on the 10th, Schneider's game picked up as he would go three-under over the final eight holes thanks to a string of birdies on holes 13, 14 and 15.

Lee's round was similar to his teammates as he had just one birdie on the front nine to turn at 2-over. He also made birdie on holes 13 thru 15 to get to 1-under but closed with two-straight bogeys for his final score of 1-over 72.

Rounding out the UW lineup was senior Noah Woolsey who is tied for 68th with a 6-over 77. Round two of the NCAA Regionals tees off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
