Freshman Duo Leading The Way

May 21, 2021

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Stanford women's golf battled through gusty conditions on Friday afternoon, concluding the first round of the 2021 NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in third with a 3-over 291. The Cardinal is led by freshman Rachel Heck, who sits in first place following a 3-under 69, her 11th-straight collegiate round in the 60s.

Heck birdied four holes on the front nine, making the turn with a 4-under 32. She would bogey No. 10 before finishing with eight straight pars to close the round in the lead by one stroke. She is one of just four players to break par on Friday in the 132-player field.

"I was so excited to tee it up today in my first NCAA Championship," Heck said. "It was great to play so well and see the team play so well. We're prepared for it to be a long week, so we are just going to take it one day and a time and continue to have fun out there."

Fellow classmate Sadie Englemann shot an opening-round, even-par 72 and is currently tied with a plethora of golfers at fifth. Sophomore Brooke Seay, one of four Cardinal playing in her first NCAA Championship, tallied a 3-over 75 on Friday, matching junior Aline Krauter's round.

The Cardinal sits just two strokes off Texas' first-round lead and will tee off beginning at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.
