Tjen Becomes First UO Player Ever to Reach NCAA Singles Quarterfinals

May 25, 2021

ORLANDO, Fla. – Janice Tjen kept her incredible freshman season going with another straight-sets victory, beating Duke's Georgia Drummy, 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship.

The true freshman is the first player in program history to advance to the national quarterfinals at the singles tournament. With a win in Wednesday's quarterfinal, Tjen would become the first Pac-12 player since 2015 to make it to the national semifinals in singles play.

"I'm very grateful to be competing in my first NCAA Championship and I am excited to be advancing to the quarterfinals," said Tjen. "I am looking forward to seeing how far I can go this week. Today was extra special because my teammates were in the stands after flying to Florida to surprise me and cheer me on."

Tjen fell in an early 2-1 hole in the first set, but responded with a dominant effort to take the lead in the match by winning five straight games to win 6-2 in the first. Neither player was able to gain control throughout the first part of the second set, as the two traded game victories with Drummy holding a 4-3 lead after holding serve once again.

However, Tjen would win the final three games to put away the match, highlighted by a huge break point to go up 5-4 before closing it out with back-to-back aces to finish it off.

Tjen moved to 21-2 on the year in singles play and has now won each of her last nine singles matches, eight of which have come against ranked opponents following the win over Drummy, who came in ranked No. 19. She improved ton 9-2 on the year in matches against ranked foes, and has still lost just seven sets all season. Tjen's singles winning percentage on the season of .913 is also the best single-season win percentage in school history.

Up next, Tjen will take on the No. 6 player in the latest ITA Singles Rankings, Anna Rogers of NC State, in the NCAA quarterfinals at 9 a.m. PT.
