Three Bears Advance Past Prelims Wednesday

Jun 16, 2021
Nathan Adrian advanced to the 100-meter freestyle semifinals with a 48.37 finish in Wednesday's preliminaries.

OMAHA, Neb. – Three-time Olympian Nathan Adrian led a group of three California Golden Bears through preliminaries Wednesday morning at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials at CHI Health Center Omaha.

Adrian (48.37) and incoming Cal signee Jack Alexy (48.69) qualified for the 100-meter freestyle semifinals with the sixth- and ninth-fastest finishes in prelims. Alexy's finish set a new 17-18-year-old National Age Group record, which was previously held by Caeleb Dressel (48.78). Adrian, meanwhile, finished third in his heat after leading at the end of the first 50 meters.

Reece Whitley qualified as the 10th seed in the 200m breaststroke semifinals after touching in 2:11.79 during prelims. The rising senior was also a semifinalist in the 2016 U.S. Trials event, and will look to earn his first finals appearance Wednesday night. Cal post-graduate and 2016 Olympian Josh Prenot (2:13.42) was 17th and listed as the first alternate.
