Nathan Adrian Takes Third In 50 Free

Jun 20, 2021
Nathan Adrian came up just short of his fourth Olympic berth, placing third in the 50-meter freestyle Sunday night in Omaha.

OMAHA, Neb. – California alumnus and eight-time Olympic medalist Nathan Adrian narrowly missed out on the chance to represent the United States in Tokyo, placing third in the 50-meter freestyle Sunday night at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials.

Adrian touched the wall in 21.73, finishing behind winner Caeleb Dressel (21.04) and Michael Andrew (21.48). It will be the first time since 2008 that Adrian, a three-time Olympian, will not be a member of the U.S. squad team. Full results from Sunday's finals can be viewed here.

The 21.73 finish by Adrian was .05 quicker than his semifinal swim Saturday night.

During the eight-day meet, four Golden Bears punched their tickets to Tokyo in Ryan Murphy (100 backstroke, 200 back), Bryce Mefford (200 back), Andrew Seliskar (4x200 freestyle) and Tom Shields (100 butterfly). The Cal quartet will join Team USA in Tokyo for the 2020 Summer Olympics on July 23 through August 8.
