Acernese Medals As World Under-23 Regatta Nears End

Jul 10, 2021

RACICE, Czech Republic – Washington rower Giulio Acernese won the bronze medal for Italy in the men's lightweight quad sculls to highlight a successful Saturday for UW athletes competing at the 2021 World Rowing Under-23 Championships.

On Sunday, the final day of the five-day regatta, nine more UW rowers – one of them in two events – will compete for medals in A finals.

Acernese's Italian quad ran neck-and-neck with the French, fighting for silver and bronze, for the entire 2,000 meters, with Germany in front throughout. The Italians actually held second place by a small margin in at 1,500 meters, but France came on to earn the silver in 5:57.68, a second-and-a-half in front of Italy (5:59.12).

In addition to Acernese's finish, several other Huskies found success on Saturday. In the men's four A/B semifinal, the Canadian crew – including UW's Adam Krol, Peter Lancashire and Jack Walkey – won, earning a place in Sunday's A final. Similarly, Husky Gert-Jan van Doorn and his Netherlands quad won its A/B semifinal, booking a place in the A final.

Holly Drapp and her United States coxed four finished fifth in its A final, to complete its competition. Additionally, Steve Rosts finished second in the men's single sculls C final, finishing 14th overall, while Louis Gallia IV and his U.S. men's four finished fifth in the C final, 17th place overall.

In additional to the Canadian four and Dutch quad, Washington will have rowers competing in four other A finals on Sunday. Teal Cohen (USA) and Holly Dunford (Great Britain) will both race in the women's four. Cohen will also compete in the women's eight, along with UW and USA teammate McKenna Bryant, in a final that includes a Husky Isabel van Opzeeland's Netherlands eight.

Lastly, Robert Pluijmert and the Dutch men's eight will compete in the A final Sunday, while Husky Mattijs Holler and his Austrian eight will row in the B final.
