Stepto and Berg Set for Olympics

Jul 16, 2021

CORVALLIS – Oregon State softball will have a pair of representatives at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, as both Tarni Stepto and head coach Laura Berg will take part in the event.

Stepto, who has signed a National Letter of Intent to play at Oregon State, will be playing for Australia, while Berg is serving as an assistant coach for Team U.S.A.

Both squads will open their tournament runs on Wednesday July 21 in Tokyo (games will take place the evening of Tuesday July 20 in the Pacific timezone). Australia and the U.S.A. will go head-to-head on July 23, with medal games slated for July 26-27.

Stepto, who will join the Oregon State softball squad in the fall, was a part of the Australian squad that swept through the WBSC Asia/Oceania Olympic qualification undefeated, and has represented the Travelodge Aussie Spirit at an international level. Stepto committed to Oregon State after spending the 2019 season at Salt Lake Community College. She earned Scenic West Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year that season with a 12-3 record and an ERA of 1.62.

Berg has been involved with USA Softball as both an athlete and a coach. As an athlete, Berg cemented herself as one of the game's greatest outfielders, helping the Red, White and Blue to three Olympic Gold Medals in 1996, 2000 and 2004, as well as an Olympic Silver Medal in 2008. Berg joined the WNT coaching staff in 2012 and served as an assistant before being named the head coach for the Junior WNT in 2017 that earned Gold at the World Baseball Softball Confederation Junior Women's World Championship.
