Doan Drafted Highest in ASU History, Murchison Goes in 5th Round

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Incoming freshmen Sun Devil men's ice hockey players Josh Doan and Ty Murchison were drafted in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft on Saturday. Doan was selected by the Arizona Coyotes as the 37th overall pick in the second round, the highest draft pick in Sun Devil Hockey program history. Murchison was selected as the 158th overall pick in the fifth round by the Philadelphia Flyers. 
 
Doan entered the draft ranked No. 87 while Murchison entered ranked No. 72 among North American skaters.

"We are very happy for Josh and Ty," said head coach Greg Powers. "This is a day they have worked very hard for their entire lives.  We will do everything in our power to continue develop both of them so they can one day wear the jerseys of the two great franchises who drafted them."

In his first season in the USHL with the Chicago Steel, Doan notched five goals and nine assists in 45 games. His breakout season came this year as he finished third in the league in scoring with 70 points - totaling 31 goals and 39 assists to be named to the USHL Second Team. He also added the title of Anderson Cup Champion and Clark Cup Champion to his trophy case after the Steel won the USHL regular season and postseason play this season.
 
A Phoenix-native and son of the former Coyote captain Shane Doan, Josh played for the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes during his entire youth hockey career. During his time with the Jr. Coyotes, Doan helped lead the team to three consecutive Tier 1 USA Hockey National Championship tournaments (16U, 15U, 14U). In 2019 during his last season with the Jr. Coyotes he scored 41 goals in 54 games.
 


 
Most recently, Doan was invited to the USA Hockey's 2021 World Junior Summer Showcase which also started Saturday, July 24th.

TY MURCHISON

Murchison has been playing in the U.S. National Team Development Program (USNTDP) for the last two years. He is the second full-time player from the USNTDP to commit to Arizona State.
 

 
During this past season with the USNTDP Juniors he scored five points in 23 games. He also suited up for the U.S. National U18 team where he collected seven goals and eight assists in 48 games. During this time he was able to play against his future teammates as the Sun Devils faced off against the U.S. National U18 team in two exhibition games in Tempe.
 
A native to Corona, California, Murchison spent his youth career with the Los Angeles Jr. Kings. In the 2018-2019 season in U16 he scored 14 points, four goals and 10 assists in 43 games. In the season prior he had 30 points in 52 games in Bantam AAA  play. Murchison is the first California native to commit to Arizona State in the NCAA era.

Doan and Murchison are the fifth and sixth draftees to play collegiate hockey solely at ASU in the Sun Devils' NCAA era.
