U.S. 3x3 Team Handed First Loss, Plum Awaits Medal Rounds

Jul 26, 2021

Japan (5-2) rallied twice from trailing by five points to escape Tuesday with a 20-18 win and hand the U.S. Olympic 3x3 Women's team its first loss of the games. The USA fell to 6-1 but had already secured the No. 1 seed into the medal round and plays France (5-3) on Wednesday at 1:00 a.m. PT.

Kelsey Plum was limited to two points as the Americans leaned on the inside scoring from Stefanie Dolson, who led the team with seven points.

Japan trailed 17-16 with 1:59 remaining before tightening up its defense and going on a three-point spurt to take the lead for good. Plum had a chance to tie the game with 0.8 seconds remaining after a shot-clock violation by Japan, but her desperation two-point attempt was blocked by Stephanie Mawuli.

On July 28, the other semifinal is set for 2:10 a.m. (all times listed are PDT). Also on July 28, the semifinal losers will play in the bronze medal game at 4:45 a.m., and the semifinal winners will meet in the gold medal game at 5:55 a.m.
