Moving Onto Semifinals

Hugo González, who was a sixth-place finalist in the 100 back earlier this week, posted a 1:57.61 for the 11th seed in the 200 IM.

TOKYO – Three Golden Bears advanced through preliminaries into the semifinal round of two men's swimming events Wednesday morning (PT) at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. American backstroke duo Bryce Mefford and Ryan Murphy earned top-seven times in the 200-meter backstroke prelims before Hugo González (Spain) clinched his spot in the 200-meter individual medley semis.
 
Mefford was successful in his Olympic debut, clocking the third-fastest time (1:56.37) of the 200 back field. Close behind was Murphy, the reigning Olympic champion in the event, with a seventh-place time of 1:56.92.
 
González, who was a sixth-place finalist in the 100 back earlier this week, posted a 1:57.61 for the 11th seed in the 200 IM.
 
UP NEXT
All three Bears will be back in action tonight (PT) with live coverage on NBC. Mefford and Murphy will swim side-by-side in the second 200 back semifinal heat at 7:11 p.m. PT before González dives into the second 200 IM semifinal heat at 8:14 p.m. PT.
