Cal Edged By No. 23 Saint Mary’s In Season Opener

Aug 26, 2021
Lucas Churchill and the Bears look to bounce back from Friday's loss in Sunday's game at UCSB.

MORAGA, Calif. – Goalkeeper Chris Gustini made six saves in the season opener for the California men's soccer team, but No. 23 Saint Mary's prevailed, 1-0, in the season opener on Friday at Saint Mary's Stadium.

With the game tied 0-0 and looking like it was heading to overtime, Jack Vestberg scored the eventual gamewinner in the 86th minute.

Midfielder Christian Gomez had Cal's last chance to score at 89:51, but his shot went high. Forward Nate Carrasco also had a pair of late shots for the Bears - a 73rd-minute header that went just wide and another shot in the 78th that was saved by Gaels goalie Nicholas Lapind.

"You have to be extremely pleased with the performance," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "Many players had outstanding games and others played their first-ever college game. When you add it all up, the positives of the match far outweighed anything else."

Cal next plays another nonconference game at UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at 7 p.m.
