Bears Come Up Short In Tulane Finale

Aug 28, 2021

NEW ORLEANS – Katie Smoot recorded 18 kills and Bella Bergmark added nine, but it wasn't enough for California in a 23-25, 28-26, 16-25, 22-25 loss to Tulane on Saturday afternoon at Fogelman Arena.

Leah Schmidt and Bergmark were named to the All-Tournament team for the Bears. Schmidt recorded 18 kills with a 2.57 kills per set average, while Bergmark totaled 24 kills and three service aces in the middle.

The Bears dropped to 2-1 on the season with the loss as Tulane improved to 3-0.

Cal battled back to take the second set behind seven early kills on just nine swings from Bergmark.

Tulane jumped out to a quick lead in the third, but the Bears got to within four at 12-8 on a kill from Sydney Lilomaiava. It was 16-12 after a Green Wave attack error, however Cal couldn't get closer down the stretch to give the hosts a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set was a battle throughout and the score was tied 20-all on a Katie Smoot kill, created by a big-time dig from Sarah Schrag. Tulane scored the next two points until back-to-back Smoot kills tied the score once again at 22.

The Green wave followed with a service ace and the Bears couldn't recover as Tulane scored the final three points to take the set and the match.

Up Next: Cal travels to Stockton, California for the Pacific Tournament Sept. 3-4.
