No. 16 UCLA Sweeps San Diego State, 3-0

SAN DIEGO - Outside hitter Mac May led UCLA (5-1) to a 3-0 sweep at San Diego State on Friday night at Aztec Court at Peterson Gym. UCLA improved to 50-12 all-time against the Aztecs with its 13th straight win in the series. Set scores were 25-17, 25-18, 25-13.

May had a match-high 14 kills to improve her career total to 1,605, which is 25 behind ninth-place Annett Buckner (1,630 - 1991-94). May also six digs and four blocks against SDSU.

Anna Dodson had a solid outing, hitting .500 for the match (8K, 1E, 14TA), while adding five blocks. Freshman outside hitter Francesca Alupei had just two kills but a season- and match-high eight blocks. Reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, Charitie Luper, had an all-around match of six kills, five digs, two assists, and one block against the Aztecs. Shelby Martin demonstrated the power of three as she registered 30 assists in the three-set win to go with three kills, three aces, and three blocks. She also contributed four digs. Lexi Hadrych also played in all three sets, tallying five kills and three blocks.

San Diego State was led by Victoria O'Sullivan as she was the only Aztec to reach double figures in kills (10). Aztec libero Natalie Smith was credited with a match-high-tying 11 digs.

SET ONE
> Bruins jumped out to a 10-5 lead on a kill by Luper. But SDSU pulled to within one point (14-13) on a service ace by Smith. Leading 17-15, UCLA outscored the Aztecs 8-2 down the stretch (including the last four points) to win the first set 25-17.
> UCLA outhit SDSU in the opening set .500 (14K, 2E, 24TA) to .121 (13K, 9E, 33TA).
> The Bruins had more blocks (6.0 to 0.0) and digs (7-6) but fewer assists (11-13). Both teams had one ace and one service error.
> Bruin set leaders included Luper in kills (four), Fleck and May in digs (three), and Dodson, Alupei, and Hadrych in blocks (three).

SET TWO
> After a hitting error by UCLA, the Aztecs led 12-8. But behind the tough serving of Kelsey Campeau (scored three points on SDSU attack errors), the Bruins tied it at 12-12 with a 4-0 run. Leading 18-17, UCLA outscored the Aztecs 7-1 down the stretch (including the last five points) to win the second set 25-18.

> The Bruins had more kills (11 to nine), assists (11 to nine), aces (1-0) and tied in blocks (5.0 to 5.0), but fewer digs (17-13) in the second frame.

SET THREE
> Four hitting errors by SDSU, coupled by four kills from May, saw UCLA race out to a 10-1 lead. Both teams traded sideouts with the Bruins maintaining the nine-point lead until it was 19-10. The Bruins outscored the Aztecs 6-3 down the stretch to complete the sweep with a 25-13 win in the final set.
