Hjorth Reaches Quarters At Battle In The Bay

SAN FRANCISCO – The California men's tennis team started the 2021-22 season at the Battle in the Bay Classic, with senior Philip Hjorth reaching the singles quarterfinals with two Thursday wins at the California Tennis Club. The Golden Bear had reached the main draw after winning a qualifying match on Wednesday.
 
Hjorth, in his second year at Cal after playing two seasons at Pacific, defeated Arizona's 32nd-ranked Jonas Ziverts, 6-3, 6-3, in the round of 32 and then topped Oklahoma's Baptiste Anselmo, 7-6(3), 4-6, 1-0(9) in the round of 16. Hjorth – who beat San Diego's Will Davies, 6-3, 6-3, in Wednesday's qualifying round – will play Stanford's Timothy Sah in Friday's quarters.
 
Also in singles qualifying on Wednesday, sophomore Bear Lucas Magnaudet fell to Cal Poly's Noah Berry, 6-0 6-2. In the back draw, Magnaudet lost to Davies, 6-2, 6-2.
 
Cal's 124th-ranked Yuta Kikuchi won his opener in the singles main draw, beating Evin McDonald from the University of Texas, 6-3, 6-3. But the senior fell in the round of 16 to Pepperdine's 125th-ranked Tim Zeitvogel, 6-4, 7-6(4).
 
Cal freshman Carl Emil Overbeck lost to Oklahoma's 46th-ranked Mason Beiler, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0(5), in the main draw's round of 32 and will move on to play the Longhorn's Nevin Arimilli in a consolation match on Friday.

The annual San Francisco tournament continues on Friday.
