USC’s Stefan Dostanic Wins Battle In The Bay Singles Championship

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. - USC junior Stefan Dostanic had another busy day at the Battle in the Bay today, with spots in both the singles and doubles title matches. He'd first pair up with teammate Bradley Frye in the doubles final, and later square off against his own fellow Trojan in the singles final. By the end of all the action, Dostanic had claimed the singles championship with a 6-4, 7-6 (2) win over Frye, while the pair wound up as runners-up in doubles. Along the way at the event, two new Trojans saw their first competition for USC, with transfers Paul Barretto and Samuel Rubell also in action in San Francisco.

The No. 2 seed in the singles draw, #68 Stefan Dostanic tallied four straight-set wins to reach the singles final. #107 Bradley Frye, had claimed three three-set wins, including an impressive upset of top-10 opponent #8 Luc Fomba of TCU in the quarterfinals. A nailbiter in the semifinals saw Frye eke out a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7) comeback win over Cal's Philip Hjorth, punching that ticket to the title match against teammate Dostanic. 

But first, Frye and Dostanic had work to do in doubles play. The top-seeded pair had pinned up several strong wins to move into the doubles final, but in the end the #17 Dostanic/Frye pairing fell 8-3 in the title match. Later, Dostanic and Frye would face off on opposite sides of the net for the singles final, where Dostanic prevailed 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Meanwhile, out in Milwaukee, USC sophomore Lodewijk Weststrate has been going strong in singles play. Freshman Peter Makk notched his first win as a Trojan out at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, where Weststrate has worked his way into the singles championship with four nice wins. He put forth a particularly heroic effort in the quarterfinals, bouncing back from a first-set loss to win it 0-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 and eventually score that spot in tomorrow's title match.
