USC Freshman Leyden Games Wins Singles Backdraw Final at 2021 Battle in the Bay
USC freshman Leyden Games made a strong USC debut by winning the Singles Backdraw Final at the 2021 Battle in the Bay in San Francisco. Games's 7-6 (2), 5-7, 11-9 victory over Pepperdine's Nikki Redelijk was the first official tournament championship win for the freshman tennis player as a Trojan.
Two more Trojan newcomers tallied wins at the Battle of the Bay. Redshirt freshman Snow Han defeated Wisconsin's Denise Stoica 6-1, 6-1 to reach the Round of 16 in the Singles Main Draw. There she fell to Pepperdine's No. 53 Lisa Zaar 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman Isabelle Lee won a match in the Singles Extra Matches where she beat Colorado's Megan Forster 7-6 (3), 6-2.
Four Trojans also traveled to Wisconsin over the weekend to compete in the Milwaukee Classic. Junior No. 56 Eryn Cayetano and sophomore No. 81 Naomi Cheong both reached the semifinals of the Singles Main Draw, where they both lost to other nationally ranked opponents.
In the quarterfinals, Cheong had a marquee win as she defeated No. 27 Sabina Machalova of Ole Miss 7-6 (5), 6-4.
Freshman Grace Piper made her USC debut by reaching the semifinals of the Singles Consolation Draw. Freshman Gabrielle Lee also competed at the Milwaukee Classic.
