Tokac Shines In CU Singles Debut

USAFA – Colorado women's tennis freshman Betina Tokac advanced to the semifinals of the Bravo division Friday afternoon here on the second day of the Bedford Cup.
 
The freshman from Turkey defeated her opening opponent after a close first set against Matea Mihaljevic of CSU. She took down the Ram in the first set 7-6(5) in a close tiebreaker, then took the second set with ease 6-1. She advanced to the quarterfinals where she defeated Air Force's Hailey Stelse 6-3, 6-4.
 
The rest of the Buffaloes dropped their opening match in their respectful divisions, but Ky Ecton, Mila Stanojevic and Antonia Balzert all rallied back in the west consolation round. After dropping her first match as a Buff, Stanojevic defeated Mirte Van Baelen of Montana State 6-1, 7-5 to advance to the west semifinals in the alpha division. Balzert followed suit with a defeat of Montana State's Marta Garcia-Rebordedo 6-1, 6-2.
 
Ecton had a much tougher match in her bravo division consolation match against Isabelle Flodin of Air Force. She lost a close opening set 7-6(3) before rallying in the second 6-3 to force a tiebreaker set. She outlasted Flodin 11-9 in the tiebreaker to advance.
 
Also for Colorado, Ellen Puzak fell in her first two matches in the charlie division but will move to the south consolation round. She had a close matchup in the west consolation against Alexis Odom. They both traded 6-2 sets with Puzak taking the second, then battled to an 11-9 decision in the tiebreaker set.
 
Thursday evening all the women competed in doubles but dropped the three matches. Ecton and Puzak fell in the alpha division opening round 6-3, while Balzert and Stanojevic dropped their opening match by the same score. Tokac teamed up with a player from CSU and fell in their bravo division opening match by 6-3 as well. All three teams will compete in consolation matches later in the tournament.
