Bruins Capture Third Place at MPSF Invitational

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins (11-1, 0-0 MPSF) captured third place at the MPSF Invitational with a 10-6 win over No. 3 Stanford (12-2, 0-0 MPSF) on Sunday afternoon at California's Spieker Aquatics Complex.

With the win over the Cardinal, UCLA improved to 76-89 in the series history. The Bruins have now won four of the last five meetings with Stanford dating back to last season.

In just his second game back this season, junior goalkeeper Bernardo Maurizi kept the Bruins in the game with 12 saves and two steals. UCLA was outshot by Stanford 36-20 for the game. Nicolas Saveljic led all scorers with four goals in the win over the Cardinal.

PERIOD ONE
> Felix Brozyna-Vilim scored the only goal for UCLA in the first period off a nice feed from Andy Rodgers on the game's first possession (7:31).
> Tyler Abramson provided the equalizer for Stanford (4:06) and the score would remain tied through the end of the first.
> The Bruins were outshot by the Cardinal 10-3 in the opening frame.
 
PERIOD TWO
> Giorgio Alessandria scored off an assist from Jake Cavano (4:43) to put the Bruins in front 2-1.
> Gabe Discipulo gave the Bruins a 3-2 lead at halftime (1:03) with a goal from two meters off a feed from Jack Larsen.
> The Bruins continued to be outshot by Stanford, 19-9. Both teams were 0-for-4 on power plays in the first half.
 
PERIOD THREE
> Nicolas Saveljic gave the Bruins a 4-3 lead (4:49) when he converted a penalty shot drawn by Brozyna-Vilim. He made it back-to-back goals (1:14) when he took an Evan Rosenfeld pass and found the back of the net to put UCLA back in front, 5-4.
> Guillermo Ocasio got a nice feed from Alessandria and scored his first of the contest to give the Bruins a 6-5 lead heading into the fourth (0:18).
 
PERIOD FOUR
> Saveljic put UCLA in front by two goals at 7-5 (6:15) when he converted a penalty shot drawn by Brozyna-Vilim to complete his hat trick.
> Freshman Gianpiero Di Martire made it 8-5 (5:36) when he took a pass from Rosenfeld to become the sixth different Bruin to score in the game.
> After Stanford cut it to 8-6, Brozyna-Vilim took a pass from Rosenfeld (third assist) to push the lead to 9-6 with a goal from set (1:23).
> Saveljic would provide the 10-6 final when he drew a penalty shot and then converted it for his fourth goal of the contest with 0:42 to go.

UP NEXT
The Bruins return home to host San Jose State and Navy on Saturday, Oct. 2, at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins will take on the Spartans at 1:00 p.m. PT and the Midshipmen at 6:00 p.m. PT.
