Anne Van Hoof Scored The Game Winner On Sunday

LOWELL, MA - Regulation wasn't enough time, but Anne Van Hoof found the back of the cage in overtime, giving the California field hockey team a 1-0 win over UMass-Lowell Sunday on the UMass-Lowell campus.

The Golden Bears improved to 6-3, 2-0 on the year.

"I knew this one would be another battle," said the Donna Fong Director of Field Hockey Shellie Onstead. "We started slow. It was emotional because UMass did a tribute to mental health before the game, and they included Zoë {Rogers}, which was super cool. It was a close game, and I expect that in conference games. It was a much better game in the second half, and it was pretty even until we got into overtime."

Van Hoof drove down center to the circle and slapped a backhand shot past the River Hawks' keeper to the far corner. Van Hoof led Cal with six shots, two on goal. Brynn Zorilla, Rachel Buttinger and Maddie Cleat also tallied two shots on goal each.

"This was our first overtime, but we had been preparing for it," Onstead said. "I felt pretty confident. The thing about overtime, is you can have all the momentum, and then it can change quickly if the other team gets loose, and they did, but Jane Onners did a great job of saving the day. Anne had a great game overall, and in the end, she got the goal."

Cato Knipping made four saves on nine shots faced. She earned her fifth win of the season and her sixth career shutout and her third this season.

Cal out shot the River Hawks, 19-9, with 11 of those 19 shots on goal.

The Bears have next week off before returning to the east coast on Friday, Oct. 8, at Maine.
