Biwer, Clayton and Hopcroft Named CU Athletes of the Week, presented by Arrow

Sep 29, 2021

BOULDER—Three Colorado Buffaloes were named the CU Athletes of the Week, presented by Arrow, as men's golfer Justin Biwer, volleyball's Leah Clayton and soccer midfielder Shanade Hopcroft earned the award.

Biwer led the Buffs as a sixth place finisher at the UNM Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M. on Friday and Saturday.  He finished with a scorecard of 70-69-72 for a 5-under 211. He also had 40 pars in the tournament, which tied him for the second most on in the 100-player field, and added a team-leading 10 birdies.

The true freshman did not let his youth stand in the way of him becoming a standout on the course. This performance combined with his 3-under par performance in Air Force's Miranda Invitational two weeks ago allowed him to become the first player in CU history to open his Buff career with two subpar performances in major tournaments.

Clayton averaged 4.83 kills per set as the Buffs fell at Washington State for the first time this season, but quickly rebounded to knock off No. 15 Utah Friday at home.  She led the team with 29 total kills while hitting .328.  She had a career-best .464 hitting percentage against the Utes with 15 kills and added two digs per set and three total blocks in the week's action.

Hopcroft scored the first goal of Pac-12 play for the Buffs, early on in their opener against California in Berkeley, Calif. In the eighth minute in the game, the senior took a shot off a header from teammate Shyra James. This was her second goal in two matches and it gave the Buffs an early 1-0 lead. She leads the team with 10 points on the season. The Buffs tied the Bears 2-2 and sit at 5-3-1 this season including a 0-0-1 mark in conference play.

Men's golf hosted the Mark Simpson CU Invitational earlier this week and will next head to South Bend, Ind., next week for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic. Women's soccer next plays Washington Thursday at Prentup Field. Volleyball hosts No. 11 Oregon and Oregon State this week at the CU Events Center.
