Three Bears Play In ITA All-American

Yuta Kikuchi and two teammates will compete in the All-American in Tulsa.

BERKELEY – The California men's tennis team will send three players – Yuta Kikuchi, Philip Hjorth and Carl Emil Overbeck – to compete in the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, starting this weekend.
 
Hjorth and Overbeck will play in prequalifying singles Saturday and Sunday at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. They hope to join Kikuchi in qualifying singles, which take place Monday and Tuesday, with the singles main draw starting next Wednesday, Oct. 6, and ending on Sunday, Oct. 10. The pair of Kikuchi and Overbeck will also compete in qualifying doubles on Monday and Tuesday in Tulsa. The doubles main draw also runs Oct. 6-10.

Last Time: Kikuchi Posts Upset; Hjorth Earns Sportsmanship Award
Cal's highlights from the recent Chowderfest, Harvard's annual invitational, included senior Yuta Kikuchi upsetting Florida's fourth-ranked Duarte Vale, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9, on Sept. 24 and senior Philip Hjorth collecting the Ned Weld Sportsmanship Award.
 
Hjorth finished with a 3-0 doubles record (2-0 partnering with Michael Wright and 1-0 with Yuta Kikuchi) along with a 2-1 singles record in Cambridge.
 
On Sunday, the last day of Chowderfest, the pair of Hjorth and Kikuchi defeated Arizona State's Max McKennon and Fabien Salle, 7-6, in doubles, and Hjorth picked up a 6-4, 7-6 win over ASU's Christian Lerby in singles. Cal's freshman duo of Wright and Carl Emil Overbeck added a 6-4 doubles result over the Sun Devils' Moritz Hoffman and Jonah Wilson. Wright also had a 3-0 doubles record at Chowderfest.
 
Last Time At The All-American
In the 2019 ITA All-American Championships on Oct. 9 in Tulsa, Cal's Yuta Kikuchi, ranked 75th, fell to Texas A&M's 16th-ranked Hady Habib, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, in the opening round of 64. Later in the day, the 16th-ranked duo of Kikuchi and Jacob Brumm lost to USC's 28th-ranked Riley Smith and Bradley Frye, 6-2, 6-1, in the doubles opening round of 32.

The Bears take part in the UCSB Classic from Oct. 8-10 in Santa Barbara, California.
