Oct 2, 2021

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Utah men tennis team wrapped up another successful day at the Idaho State Invitational. The Utes had players advance to the finals in the White and Orange singles draws and claimed the doubles title.

The day began with doubles play in the East draw stage, where Utah duo Mathias Gavelin/Rian Ta defeated host duo Hiroki Fujita/Aleksandar Petrovic, 6-3. The Utah duo then took on the pair from Montana, Pontus Hallgren/Milo Benn, and came away with a 6-2 victory to win the doubles title at the Idaho State Invite.

Doubles' play in the West draw stage resulted in second place for the Utes. Jayson Blando/Michael Blando defeated the Montana State pair, Zelver/Watkins, 6-2 in the semifinal round. However, the Utes fell short in the final match and lost to Bradley Buckland/Manuel Monteiro from Montana State.

The tournament continued with singles, where the Utes landed both Rian Ta and Mathias Gavelin in the finals. Gavelin secured his position in the Orange draw finals after downing host and tournament top-seed Patrick Kristensen in the semifinal round, 7-6(5), 6-4. Ta cruised to the victory against host Zachary Matuszak, 6-2, 6-1, and secured his spot for the White draw final.
