Bears Falter In Tulsa

Oct 3, 2021

TULSA, Okla. – California men's tennis freshman Carl Emil Overbeck was within one victory of reaching qualifying singles at the ITA All-American Championships, after winning his prequalifying singles round of 64 match on Sunday at the Case Tennis Center. But the first-year Golden Bear fell in the round of 32, while Cal senior Philip Hjorth withdrew from prequalifying due to injury.

Overbeck defeated UCLA's Stefan Leustian, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, in his first match on Sunday. But a loss to LSU's Gabrial Diaz Freire, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, kept Overbeck from joining Cal senior Yuta Kikuchi in the qualifying singles draw, which is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday in Tulsa.

Hjorth was slated to play Charlotte's Thomas Brown in the round of 64 before having to withdraw.

Kikuchi and Overbeck will also compete in qualifying doubles on Monday at the All-American, with the Cal pair facing Harvard's Henry von der Schulenburg and Harris Walker in the round of 64 at 5 p.m. CT.
