John-Baptiste wins Week 8 Final of UK Pro League

Oct 3, 2021

ALDERSHOT, England -- Sun Devil Women's Tennis alumna Lauryn John-Baptiste pulled in the first tournament title of her career on Sunday when she defeated Katy Dunne, 3-6, 6-3, 10-3, to win the Week 8 Final of the UK Pro League.

John-Baptiste, a class of 2021 graduate, upset Dunne, once the No. 212 ranked singles player by the Women's Tennis Association, who had cruised to the final round.

The former Sun Devil had grinded all week to reach the finals, narrowly beating Katie Stresnakova and Emily Appleton in the two previous rounds.

A four-year mainstay in the Arizona State lineup, John-Baptiste won 11 of 17 singles matches as a senior last spring, with three of those coming against opponents from ranked teams.

John-Baptiste was a terrific doubles player in Tempe, teaming up with Ilze Hattingh for three seasons. The duo had been ranked No. 1 on separate occasions, becoming the first tandem in program history to earn the ranking.

In the spring of 2019, John-Baptiste and Hattingh were named the Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year.

Ray Anderson, Arizona State's Vice President for University Athletics, tweeted his congratulations for John-Baptiste following her finals win on Sunday.

"Congratulations, Lauryn!" he wrote. "Keep up the hard work and dedication. #GoDevils"
