Beavers Challenge California, Stanford on Road Stretch

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer team hits the road this week to clash with California on Thursday in Berkeley, Calif. and Stanford in Stanford, Calif. on Sunday. Both matches are slated to start at 2 p.m. and will be broadcasted on the Pac-12 Networks. The Beavers are 6-1-1 (2-0-0 Pac-12), second in the Pac-12 standings, and are ranked No. 15 in this week's United Soccer Coaches rankings. 
 
Last Time Out 
The Beavers defeated No. 23 UCLA and No. 13 San Diego State in Corvallis, Ore. last week to open Pac-12 action. After graduate student Adrian Molina-Diaz scored the first goal of the game, Oregon State overcame a three-goal deficit to topple UCLA on Sept. 30. Between the 64th and 67th minutes, redshirt senior Tyrone Mondi, Molina-Diaz, and junior Sofiane Djeffal found the net to secure a 4-3 victory over the Bruins. 
 
On Oct. 3, the Beavers picked up their second conference win of the season, shutting out San Diego State, 2-0. Molina-Diaz scored his third goal of the weekend and fourth of the season. Redshirt sophomore Carlos Moliner scored in the 24th minute, earning his first goal of the season. Junior Adrian Fernandez recorded his 17th career solo shutout and third of the 2021 season.
 
Last Time Against California
Oregon State met Cal twice during the 2020-21 season. The Beavers hosted the Golden Bears on Mar. 6, 2021 in Corvallis, Ore., shutting out Cal, 4-0. Djeffal, Gloire Amanda, Joel Walker, and Mondi each scored goals. In their second meeting, on Mar. 28, 2021, OSU fell to Cal, 1-0, in Berkeley, Calif. Historically, Oregon State is 17-31-5 against the Golden Bears. 
 
Scouting California
Cal comes to Corvallis at 2-6-1 (0-3-0 Pac-12) this season. The Golden Bears shut out Dixie State, 2-0, in their Sept. 3 home opener and edged past UNLV, 4-3, on Sept. 5. Spanning from Sept. 9 to Oct. 3, Cal has dropped five contests, including matches against Pac-12 contenders San Diego State, UCLA, and Stanford. 
 
Junior Jack Singer is the top scorer for the Golden Bears, notching three goals, including a game-winner. Leading Cal in the assists category is sophomore Evan Davila with three. In goal, redshirt senior Chris Gustini has clocked 447:44 minutes and has made 19 saves, allowing seven goals. Cal has tallied nine goals compared to 17 scored by opponents. 
 
Last season Cal posted a record of 4-5-1 (4-5-1 Pac-12). The Golden Bears picked up wins over San Diego State (Mar. 13 and April 10), UCLA (Mar. 20, 2-0) and Oregon State (Mar. 28). 
 
Last Time Against Stanford
Clashing with Stanford twice last season, the Beavers and the Cardinal split meetings. On Mar. 13 in Stanford, Calif., the Cardinal managed to edge past the Beavers, 3-2. Amanda earned both of the Beavers' goals at the 12th and 16th minute marks. Hosting the Cardinal in Corvallis, Ore. on April 10, 2021, Oregon State flipped the script, defeating Stanford, 3-2. Amanda, Mondi, and Djeffal found the net for the victory. OSU's all-time series record against Stanford is 8-37-8.
 
Scouting Stanford
Stanford is 4-4-1 (1-2-0 Pac-12) this season, posting shutouts against Pacific, UC Irvine, and Cal as well as a 2-1 win over UC Santa Barbara. The Cardinal dropped double overtime matches to San Diego State, who was ranked No. 21 at the time, as well as Saint Mary's (Calif.). Prior to their match against the Beavers, Stanford will host Washington on Oct. 7. 
 
Junior Ousseni Bouda leads Stanford in goals with four and assists with eight. Between the pipes, redshirt junior Matt Frank has clocked 746:15 minutes and has made 27 saves, only allowing five goals. Stanford has collected 14 goals, compared to eight scored by opponents. 
 
Last spring, the Cardinal went 10-3-1 (7-2-1 Pac-12), posting a six-match win-streak from Feb. 12 to Mar. 13. In the NCAA Tournament, Stanford defeated Omaha in the second round, 1-0, in overtime on May 2 before falling to No. 16 North Carolina, 1-0, on May 6.
