Men’s Tennis Takes Home Two Group Titles at Utah Invite

 
SALT LAKE CITY – The men's tennis squad wrapped up the Utah Invitational Sunday at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center after playing the last four days. The Utes secured the first-place titles for the Red and Gray singles groups.
 
Utah opened doubles against the Idaho State Bengals, the squad dominated and won all their matches. On court one Francisco Bastias and Bruno Caula defeated the Bengal duo 6-2. On court two, Jayson Blando and Mathias Gavelin took the upper hand against Idaho State's Patrick Trhac and Hiroki Fujita, finishing 6-3. Michael Blando and Bruno Krenn did not play on court three due to a Bengal injury.
 
In the final round of doubles, Utah faced Montana. Utah's duo of J. Blando and Gavelin came away with a 6-4 victory. However, they were the only doubles team to defeat Montana as the No. 1 doubles team and No. 3 doubles team were defeated.
 
The Utes played the last round of singles against in-state rival Weber State to close out the tournament. On court one, Bastias won his first set 6-3 and led 3-1 in the second set. He clinched the match after the Wildcats retired. On court two, Caula withdrew and was unable to play the match, granting the Wildcats an automatic win.
 
On court three Gavelin battled against Weber State's Arthur Serafim but ultimately dropped the match, 6-2 6-0. Krenn had an impressive match against Elyes Marouani, and took the victory 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. On court five J. Blando downed Wildcat Bo-Han Li 6-2, 6-2. On court six, M. Blando put up a fight against his opponent, but unfortunately lost the match 6-3, 6-4.
 
The Utes will continue prepare and get back to action at the LMU Invitational, set to begin on Nov. 4, 2021. Franco Capalbo will compete at the ITA Fall Championship following his first-place win at the ITA Regional Championship.
