USC Women's Volleyball Pulls Out Reverse Sweep Over Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. – The USC women's volleyball team (8-8, 4-3 Pac-12) went the distance with Arizona State (8-10, 1-6) at Desert Financial Arena and came away with a reverse-sweep five-set victory (19-25, 19-25, 25-13, 25-21, 16-14) on Friday, Oct. 15
 
KEY PLAYERS

  • Jr. OH Kalen Owes returned to her hometown and came off the bench to lead the Women of Troy with 12 kills and a .321 hitting night to go with five digs.
  • Jr. OPP Emilia Weske added 10 kills with four blocks and three digs.
  • Gr. MB Candice Denny hit .462 with seven kills (1e, 13att) and had five blocks (two solo).
  • Fr. MB Tyrah Ariail also had seven kills (2e, 15att, .333) and tallied six blocks (one solo).
  • Fr. S Mia Tuaniga put up her first-career double-double with 28 assists and 11 digs and added two kills and two aces.
  • Gr. OH Shannon Scully started at outside hitter but finished the match in the libero jersey and had 16 digs and two aces.
  • For Arizona State, Marta Levinska led with 17 kills (6e, 49att, .224) and had a double-double with 14 digs. Iman Isanovic had 15 kills (6e, 39att, .231) with eight digs and three aces. Ella Snyder had the double-double with 40 assists and 11 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • USC out-hit ASU, .207 to .103 and had more kills (9-7) and more blocks (4-2) in the first set, but the Trojans committed nine service errors and had five receptions errors as the Devils claimed a 25-19 win.
  • More of the same in the second gave ASU another 25-19 win as the Sun Devils hit .324 with 17 kills (5e) on 37 attacks. Levinska (5), Isanovic (4), and Claire Jeter (4) led the ASU attack.
  • Tied for the ninth time at 12-all, the Trojans reeled off an incredible 13-1 run to claim set three, 25-13. Weske had four kills while Owes added three and the Trojans served five aces to run away with the win. 
  • The Trojans dug out of a four-point hole and used a 7-1 run in the fourth set to get a 25-21 win. Owes added five more kills as USC held ASU to a .119 hitting percentage (12k, 7e, 42att). 
  • USC led by as many as four on three occasions in the fifth and appeared to have held off the Sun Devils at 15-12, but Arizona State won a challenge review to make it 14-13. USC got the next point, but another successful challenge made the score 14-all. ASU's final two errors were most costly as the Trojans completed the 16-14 win. 

UP NEXT

  • The Trojans head south on the interstate to face Arizona (11-7, 3-4 Pac-12) on Sunday (Oct. 17) at 1 p.m. PT at McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz. The match will be shown live on the Pac-12 Networks.

MATCH NOTES

  • USC improved to 72-14-1 all-time against Arizona State and to 32-9 when the teams meet in Tempe.
  • The Trojans improved to 58-25 all-time in the state of Arizona.
  • USC won its first five-setter of the season and improved to 1-3 in four such matches this fall. The Trojans also improved to 143-97 all-time in five-set matches and to 64-47 in road five-set contests.
  • In five-set matches against ASU, the Trojans go to 11-4 all-time and to 8-3 when played in Tempe.
  • The Women of Troy won a five-set match after losing the first two sets for the first time since USC defeated Syracuse in Milwaukee, Wis., on Sept. 8, 2018.
