Bears Play At ITA Regionals On The Farm

BERKELEY – The California women's tennis team will send several Golden Bears to compete in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships from Friday through Tuesday at the Taube Family Tennis Center at Stanford.

The 12 ITA regional championships around the nation serve as qualifying tournaments for the ITA National Fall Championships, which will take place Nov. 4-7 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. Please visit the national championships site here for more information.
 
Last Time: Bears Busy At ITA All-Americans
Cal had three Bears win their qualifying singles openers on Oct. 4 at the ITA All-American Championships in Charleston, South Carolina, but the trio fell in the second round.
 
In the round of 64, Cal freshman Jessica Alsola, a No. 9 seed, knocked off Wisconsin's 113th-ranked Xinyu Cai, 7-6(4), 6-3; the 119th-ranked Valentina Ivanov defeated Arizona State's Patricija Spaka – another No. 9 seed – 6-1, 3-6, 6-4; and sophomore Hannah Viller Moeller topped Tulsa's Shura Poppe, 6-0, 6-2.
 
But in the round of 32, Alsola lost to Pepperdine's 44th-ranked Taisiya Pachkaleva, 6-3, 7-5; Ivanov fell to Oklahoma's 39th-ranked Carmen Corley, 6-1, 6-3; and Viller Moeller dropped a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 match to Oklahoma's 60th-ranked Ivana Corley.
 
Last Time At ITA Regionals
The main draw singles and doubles semifinals at the 2019 ITA Northwest Regional Championships
had a Big Match feel to them, with three Cal players battling their Stanford counterparts on the Farm. But the Golden Bears lost to the Cardinal to close out their regional campaign.
 
Cal's fifth-seeded Valentina Ivanov, taking on the top-seeded and sixth-ranked Michaela Gordon, lost 6-4, 7-5, in her semifinal. The fourth-seeded pair of Anna Bright and Haley Giavara fell to Stanford's second-seeded Emily Abuthnott and Angelica Blake, 6-2, 6-1, in doubles.
 
Three Bears wound up competing in the 2019 National Fall Championships in Newport Beach, California. Giavara and Bright played in doubles, and Giavara, Bright and Valentina Ivanov played in singles.
 
Next Time
Any Bears who qualify will compete in the Nov. 4-7 ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego, while another Cal contingent plays in the Nov. 5-7 ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Arizona.
