Cats Cap Stephens Cup Run With Match Play Win

Oct 20, 2021

ROLAND, Ark. – With a 3-1-1 match play win over Florida State, Arizona Men's Golf ended their week at the Stephens Cup on a positive note. Junior Chase Sienkiewicz (5 & 3), Sam Sommerhauser (2UP) and Christian Banke (1UP) won Arizona's three points with wins in their matches as Aidric Chan tied his match as the tournament's format closely followed that of the NCAA Championships.

"To end our week with a win is a nice feeling for our team," said head coach Jim Anderson. "We finished match play strong like we finished Monday's 36 holes of stroke play strong.  Our three days at the Stephens Cup proved to be a great experience for all our players in a setting very different from our home courses and in a format similar to postseason play. This week was a great preparation tool for our team to end our fall schedule."

The Wildcats faced Florida State in Wednesday's match play after tying the Seminoles for third place following three rounds of stroke play. Arizona finished in third place following its second-round score of 281 (7-under), which was the lowest round posted by any team in the field.

The nationally-televised Stephens Cup is the conclusion of the Cats' fall schedule, which also included a runner-up finish at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational on the Golf Channel. Arizona will open 2022 with the Copper Cup at Southern Dunes Golf Course in Maricopa, Arizona on Sunday, Jan. 16.
