Overtime Thriller for Hockey in 4-3 Win

Oct 23, 2021

HAMILTON, NY -- Overtime thriller in New York! Tim Theocharidis scored the game-winning goal only 23 seconds into overtime to secure Arizona State's (4-4-0) win, 4-3, over Colgate (5-2-0) on Saturday night.

ASU split the series with Colgate with goals from four different Sun Devil skaters including Jack Becker, Johnny Walker, Josh Doan, and Theocharidis.

After a scoreless first period, graduate Jack Becker said no more. A mere minute into the second frame, the forward got the Sun Devils on the board first. It's his second goal in as many games.

Two minutes later, ASU found themselves on a 5-on-3 power play following calls for slashing and boarding against Colgate. Tim Theocharidis leapt into the air at the blue line and caught a flying puck to keep the Sun Devils in the offensive zone. The jump set up a power play goal by Johnny Walker to extend ASU's lead to 2-0.

Colgate evened the playing field with its second goal to knot the score, 2-2, at 5:36 in the third period. With five minutes left in regulation, Colgate scored again to take the lead for the first time on the night.

With only three minutes left in regulation, freshman Josh Doan scored on a power play opportunity to tie the game. Doan finished the weekend with three goals and is on a three-game point-scoring streak.

Still knotted at 3-3 at the end of regulation, ASU went into overtime - the first of the season. Overtime lasted all of 23 seconds before Tim Theocharidis carried the puck over the blue line and shot from the slot for the game-winning goal. The OT snipe was Theocharidis' first goal of the season.

Starting netminder Ben Kraws made 29 saves on the night - tied for second-most in a game by the junior.

ASU finished the night with 38 shots on goal - the same amount as Friday night as well. Thirty-eight is the most SOG by the team this season. The overtime win is the first for ASU since the 2019-20 season at Holy Cross on February 7, 2020. Jordan Sandhu played in his 100th collegiate game on Saturday night against Colgate.
