Ong, Wagle Claim ITA Regionals Doubles Title

SAN DIEGO – Vanessa Ong and Elise Wagle of the UCLA women's tennis team partnered to claim the ITA Southwest Regional Championships doubles title Sunday, earning a spot in November's ITA National Fall Championships as a result.

Barnes Tennis Center hosted the five-day event, which saw six of seven Bruins earn at least one victory. Also in action were Ava Catanzarite, Caroline Goldberg, Kimmi Hance, Taylor Johnson and Sasha Vagramov. Single play featured a 128-participant field, while the doubles tournament had 64 pairs in action.

Ong and Wagle debuted as a partnership, advancing through the draw to earn each player's first-career title at the college level. Over the course of three days, Ong and Wagle defeated three equally- or higher-seeded pairs and advanced by way of walkover two other times. They most notably knocked off the nation's No. 11 tandem – and tournament's No. 1 seed – Shiori Fukuda and Taisiya Pachkaleva of Pepperdine, by a 6-3 score. Ong and Wagle also beat Abigail Desiatnikov/Jordyn McBride of San Diego (6-2) and Savannah Broadus/Janice Tjen of Pepperdine (6-4, 2-6, 1-0 [10-6]). Each Bruin is 5-0 in doubles play.

Vagramov posted the best singles showing, advancing to the quarterfinal round. She took down No. 13 Victoria Flores of Pepperdine, 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-1, in the round of 16. Vagramov would bow out one match later, when she was felled by the eventual champion, No. 53 Lisa Zaar of the Waves. Vagramov has a team-best 7-1 singles mark on the season.
